In case you missed it, we now offer spray tans at the salon! We all know that achieving a sun-kissed glow via the sun or tanning beds is less than ideal given premature aging and the dangers of skin cancer. Lather’s new sunless and UV-free spray tan service gives you a healthy glow without the side effects and is totally natural.

The spray tans are performed by our newest team member, Sarah Hartman, who is a certified Spray Tan Specialist. Sarah uses a solution comprised of healthy ingredients, such as vitamin E and aloe vera, and botanical ingredients like rosemary and ginseng. And, instead of UV rays creating the tan on your skin, the spray tan solution uses a molecule called DHA, or dihydroxyacetone.

DHA is derived from sugar beets. It is FDA-approved and has been used in the cosmetic industry for over 35 years. The DHA works with the amino acids and protein in your skin — the superficial layer, or epidermis — to develop the tan over a period of time. The tan basically sits on the skin like paint on a canvas. It doesn’t penetrate into your bloodstream.

Thanks to the healthy, natural ingredients in our spray tan solution, this service is safe for pregnant and nursing women. However, if you would like to check with your doctor, we can provide you with a copy of the ingredients list to take to your next checkup. (Keep in mind that women in their first trimester may experience a shorter tan due to their increased hormone level.)

It is important to note that our spray tan service is not an airbrush tan. An airbrush service releases a fog or overspray into the air, spraying the technician as well. Our spray tan, however, is applied with an intense pressure that penetrates to the back of your epidermis and causes your tan to last longer than a traditional airbrush tan. It also cuts the overspray by over 90 percent because of the powerful penetration of the air right onto the skin.

Our spray tan solution goes on evenly and dries quickly. This is not an orangey, Oompa Loompa color that you’ve heard horror stories about. It is truly a natural-looking result. The process only takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the tan will continue to darken over the next 8 to 24 hours. Your tan will last for about 7 to 10 days.

To help your tan last longer and fade evenly, it is crucial to moisturize daily, as dry skin can cause blotchiness. We recommend moisturizing twice a day with an unscented lotion. Do not use baby oil as your moisturizer. Baby oil does not penetrate the skin and will actually make your tan seem to slide off.
